S Sixth and Reed Street - Intersection Safety Improvement
This intersection has been an area of concern for South University Neighborhood Residents for a number of years. Located next to an elementary school and heavily used by area residents there is a concern for safety of our residents.
This intersection was identified in the University Neighborhoods Revitalization plan as needing a 4 way stop and approved by San Jose City Council in 1998. Since that time the community has learned more about Traffic Calming and has identified alternatives that would both beautify and make safer this intersection. These are:
Landscaped corner bulb outs with wheel chair access directed to the crosswalk
Landscaped, irrigated 10' medians stretching 100 feet along Reed street on either side of S Sixth
An 8' diameter landscaped traffic circle
Textured, color concrete crosswalks - appearance similar to stone or brickwork
Historic Street Lights appropriate to the age and character of the neighborhood
Drinking fountain on one corner, next to school. Park benches on two corners.
All items have been presented to the immediate neighborhood at neighborhood association meetings (South University Neighborhood) on an ongoing basis since 1999 and have received enthusiastic support from the community with each presentation. These items have been presented to and discussed with the Department of Transportation for the city of San Jose - most recently on Saturday 25 August 2001. The city has agreed to placement of temporary rubber bumpers for the majority of the requested items which would allow the community to review the proposal.
As funding for Traffic Calming is limited for the city the UNC has indicated it would assist in fundraising for beautification items
