Civic Plaza Update
Bill Ekern (SJRA) reported on the proposed design elements for 5th Street north and south of Santa Clara St. The plan is to narrow 5th north of Santa Clara and make it more pedestrian friendly. South of the Civic Plaza, 5th S will be flattened to allow a Farmers Market. The sidewalks will also be widened.
Currently they are looking to add sycamores as street trees, but understand that there is resistance to this in the neighborhoods.
The proposed parking structure on 5th street will require removing the historic Fox Building. SJRA is looking into options that could save the building.
SJRA and SJSU have a long term goal of connecting the 5th St. pedestrian corridor with the SJSU quad.
